Waterworks Museum : Waterworks Museum, Chestnut Hill, MA July 9, 2011 The Waterworks Museum is one of the country's first metropolitan water systems, The Waterworks Museum is located on the site of the original Chestnut Hill Reservoir and pumping station. By the 1880’s, Boston’s water system couldn’t keep up with the rapid growth of the city and its water needs. Chestnut Hill was identified as the location for a new reservoir and main pumping station. The original station was built in 1887, but by the 1890’s, it was clear that demand had quickly outstripped the ability to transport sufficient water. The need for more water resulted in the installation of increasingly powerful (and enormous!) pumping engines, which operated every day until the 1970’s, when the site was taken offline, and Boston’s water supply shifted to the Quabbin Reservoir. The Chestnut Hill Reservoir, however, is still used as a back-up source of water in case of emergencies.

Arnold Arboretum : Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University - established in 1872 it is the oldest public arboretum in North America and run by Harvard University. The arboretum is 265 acres of flora and fauna collected from all around the world. It is situated between three Boston neighborhoods: Jamaica Plain, Roslindale and West Roxbury. St Louis Cemetery No. 1, New Orleans : St. Louis Cemetery #1 is the oldest and most famous. It was opened in 1789, replacing the city's older St. Peter Cemetery (no longer in existence) as the main burial ground when the city was redesigned after a fire in 1788. It is 8 blocks from the Mississippi River, on the north side of Basin Street, one block beyond the inland border of the French Quarter. It borders the Iberville housing project. It has been in continuous use since its foundation. The renowned Voodoo priestess Marie Laveau is believed to be interred in the Glapion family crypt. Other notable New Orleanians here include Bernard de Marigny, the French-Creole playboy who brought the game of craps to the United States; Barthelemy Lafon, the architect and surveyor who allegedly became one of Jean Lafitte's pirates; and Paul Morphy, one of the earliest world champions of chess. Delphine LaLaurie is also believed to lay in rest here. Architect and engineer Benjamin Latrobe was buried there after dying from yellow fever in 1820 while doing engineering for the New Orleans water works. Because the city is built on a swamp, the deceased have to be buried above ground here in elaborate stone crypts and mausoleums. Saint Louis Cemetery is the name of three Roman Catholic cemeteries in New Orleans, Louisiana. All of these graves are above ground vaults; most were constructed in the 18th century and 19th century. The cemetery spans just one square block but is the resting place of many thousands. A Protestant section (generally not vaulted) lies in the north-west section.

Bash Bish Falls, MA : Bash Bish Falls State Park In the extreme southwest corner of the state is a cluster of state parks noted for their spectacular scenery and breathtaking views. Located here is Bash Bish Falls, one of Massachusetts' most dramatic and its highest single-drop waterfall. Cascading water tumbles through a series of gorges and a hemlock-hardwood ravine forest, and then drops about 60 feet into a sparkling pool below. Bash Bish Falls is located next to the 4,169 acre Mount Washington State Forest which offers 30 miles of trails, including the South Taconic Trail and wilderness camping.

Icy Straight Point, Alaska : Icy Strait Point, located on Chichagof Island, is owned by Huna Totem Corporation and is located 35 miles west of Juneau in Hoonah, Alaska. Chichagof Island is home to over 3,500 coastal brown (grizzly) bears, almost two bears per square mile! It is considered the highest density of bears in the world. Icy Strait Point is located right around the corner from Point Adolphus, one of the world's premier whale watching destinations. Scores of whales make this their home for the summers. While we were visiting Icy Straight Point we went on the Spasski River Valley, Wildlife & Bear Search expedition. We did see some bears from the bus window while going to and coming back from our destination. Once a few bears were standing in the middle of the road. Geri was clearly the best bear spotter on the bus! Our visit to Icy Straight Point was on June 21, 2011

Celebrity Century - Alaska cruise : This gallery focuses on the Celebrity Century and life onboard. We took a 7 night Alaska Hubbard Glacier cruise from 6/19/11 to 6/26/11 with Jim & Geri Shiring. The cruise originated in Vancouver, cruised in the Inside Passage and stopped in Icy Straight Point, Juneau and Ketchikan returning through the Inside Passage to Vancouver. The Celebrity Century, inagurated in December 1995, is 815 foot long, cruises at 21.5 knots (which is about 25 miles/hr) and has a guest capacity of 1,814.

Hubbard Glacier - Alaska : June 22, 2011 Alaska cruise on Celebrity Century Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier on the North American continent. It has been thickening and advancing toward the Gulf of Alaska since it was first mapped by the International Boundary Commission in 1895 (Davidson, 1903). This is in stark contrast with most glaciers, which have thinned and retreated during the last century. This atypical behavior is an important example of the calving glacier cycle in which glacier advance and retreat is controlled more by the mechanics of terminus calving than by climate fluctuations. If Hubbard Glacier continues to advance, it will close the seaward entrance of Russell Fiord and create the largest glacier-dammed lake on the North American continent in historic times.
